O que impede duas pessoas de estarem juntas? Uma pessoa a mais.
O que impede uma pessoa de lutar por outra? Nada!
Pedro vive na periferia, onde trabalha na oficina do seu pai. Diáriamente desloca-se ao centro da cidade onde estuda e encontra o seu grupo de amigos que por alturas do verão, desce até ao rio e aí passam as tardes, os tempos livres ou o tempo de aulas.
Entre charros, passeios de mota e mergulhos, tudo parece correr bem neste grupo, até que Pedro e o Amigo começam a disputar a mesma rapariga.
Pedro é lançado numa espiral descendente, onde tudo à sua volta se parece desmoronar. Como o iman atrai a limalha, parece Pedro atrair os problemas, desde a escola até à relação com os pais.
É a história de Pedro, que de tanto lhe empurrarem a cabeça para baixo, aprendeu a respirar debaixo de água.

[From the initial idea to final cut, Breathing (underwater) was two years in the making.
With a crew of mostly (but not entirely) recent graduates from Lisbon and Berlin film schools, the film was shot during two weeks in Coimbra, Portugal.
Without being a film about Coimbra, it is however a story deeply influenced by certain parts of the city, that is the city's other side, the one which doesn't usually appear on the screen, the most industrial and dirtiest areas, with unpaved streets.
There are no students in capes and gowns, in fact quite the reverse. Here students roll joints in their lessons about The Lusiads [Portugal's national work of literature] and bunk off to go diving in the Mondego river.
Nearly all the actors are from the city and this was their first experience in film, except the lead, Alexandre Pinto -- known for his part in Os Mutantes and (the forthcoming) O Mal -- and Vitor Norte who plays the father.
Breathing (underwater) is, however, a film that could take place in any part of Portugal and might be equally about a youth of any nationality. What's important here is to reflect upon certain essential human values, those without place or country.
