Apesar de viver no limiar da pobreza, Gebo continua a sua actividade de contabilista para sustentar Doroteia, a mulher, e Sofia, a nora. A existência daquelas três pessoas é triste e monótona, girando à volta da ausência de João, o filho, que ninguém sabe onde está ou as razões por que partiu. Apesar de o velho senhor tentar encontrar maneiras de aliviar o sofrimento das duas mulheres, parece que nada consegue minimizar as suas dores. Até que, sem que já ninguém o esperasse, João regressa. E é a partir daquele momento que o equilíbrio familiar, já de si frágil, se rompe, dando origem a uma catástrofe…

Um cobrador e contabilista honrado cumpre o seu dever mas esconde da sua esposa que o filho, João (a Sombra), é ladrão.
Por causa disso, Gebo é alvo de chacota por parte de quem o conhece e acaba por assumir o crime do filho, passando três anos na cadeia. Aí pensa na sua vida de injustiças e questiona tudo...

[Despite living on the brink of poverty, Gebo continues his work as an accountant to support his wife, Doroteia, and his daughter-in-law, Sofia. These three persons’ lives are sad and monotonous, focused on the absence of João, the son. Nobody knows where he is or why he left. Although the old man tries to find ways to ease the suffering of the two women, it seems like nothing can minimize their pain. Until, when nobody expected it, João returns. And from that moment, the family balance, already fragile, collapses, causing a catastrophe…

Set in the late 19th century, about a honored but poor patriarch who sacrifices himself to protect his fugitive son.
Despite his age and general weariness, Gebo keeps on working as an accountant to provide for his family. He lives with his wife, Doroteia, and his daughter-in-law, Sofia, but it is the absence of João, son and husband, that worries them.
Gebo seems to be hiding something, especially to Doroteia, who is anxiously waiting to see her son again. Sofia is also waiting for her husband to come home, and yet she fears him. All of a sudden, João arrives and everything changes.]
