[Believed that “The Catrineta Ship” to be dating from the 16th century (1565). This widely popular song has become an icon of the Portuguese adventure in the open seas. Our novelist and poet Almeida Garret collected the poem, author unknown, and thought it told the story of the carrack that, in 1565 brought Albuquerque Coelho from Olinda (Brazil) to Lisbon. “The Catrineta Ship” depicts the maritime tragedies of the Portuguese history during the Discoveries and it also shows the deep Christian beliefs of our sailors.]
